Yoshimi Shunya
 

Professor Yoshimi is a leading sociologist and cultural theorist. He is currently Dean of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo. He authored many books and articles on Tokyo. In addition to being in the Urban Typhoon team, he is also organizing the Cultural Typhoon Symposium, a major cultural studies event attended by hundreds of Japanese and Asian scholars. This year the Cultural Typhoon Symposium is taking place in Shimokitazawa and focuses on city culture.

   

 

Masami Kobayashi

 

Professor Kobayashi teaches urban design at Meiji University. He is one of the main opponent to new redevelopment plan for Shimokitazawa. He is the leader of a resident movement called Shimokitazawa Forum which is developing alternative plans for Shimokitazawa. Last year he hosted a Harvard GSD studio lead by Peter Rowe in Shimokitazawa.

   

  Matias Echanove
 
After studying urban planning at Columbia University, Matias moved to Tokyo and started a project-orientated PhD at the University of Tokyo on urban information systems using case studies in New York, Tokyo, Bogotá, and Bombay. He is one of the main organizer of the Urban Typhoon Workshop, trying to put global imagination at the service of Shimokitazawa and all alternative communities around the world.
   

  Kimura Kazuho
 
Kazuho is a 25 years old University of Tokyo student and resident of Shimokitazawa. He is one of the leader of the grassroots group Save the Shimokitazawa, which represent the younger and alternative residents of Shimokitazawa. He is also the chief editor of a local magazine called Misatikoh. He is one of the main organizer of the Urban Typhoon workshop.
   

  Tomo Takeda
 
Tomo was trained as an architect and Master of Architectural Planing at Tokyo Denki University. She has explored many modes of architectural intervention including interior design, landscape design and web design. She concentrated on not only on design but also on the management of projects. She was responsible for the Japan Pavilion on the Web at World Expo 2005. She is the webmaster of the Urban Typhoon Workshop.
   

  Taro Taguchi
 
Research Associate at Waseda University Department of Architecture. Director of community NPO in Odawara city. Major in urban and rural design. He has done many community development project in many urban and rural areas. He obtained his PhD this march on the theme of institutional process design. He developed a new method of community design through oral histories recollection. Taro Taguchi published a book titled « Machizukuri Oral History » on March 2005.
   

  Joanne Jakovich
 
Joanne studied obtained a Master of Environmental Studies at the University of Tokyo and later worked for architect Fumihiko Maki. Currently she is doing a PhD in Architecture at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on the development of tools that enable gestural interaction as the primary means for designing interactive spaces.
   

  Alejandro (Alex) Jaimes
 
Alex is a Colombian artist and research scientist (multimedia, computer vision) working and living in Tokyo since October of 2003. He uses multiple media (photography, film, video, and writing) to explore issues related to cultural differences, similarities, and cultural awareness. He holds a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University (New York) and he studied photography at Universidad de los Andes (Bogota) and Columbia University. He has lectured at major conferences worldwide and his artwork has been shown in four continents.
   

  Jillian Puleo
 
Jillian has a background in geography and urban studies and is currently a participant in the JET programme. She is returning to the U.S. next year to pursue a graduate degree in sustainable community development and is interested in urban planning issues in Japan. She is co-organizer of Wakai, an on-going project focused on the impact of globalization on youth culture and dedicated to exploring social issues and provoking social change in Japan.
   

  Kei Nakayama
 
Kei Nakayama majored in politics at Keio University and explored, from a theoretical approach, the creation of public space lending to openness. Kei has also worked to create interactive spaces, such as the renovation and reopening of a Japanese house for student social space near KeioUniversity's Mita campus. He has even used his own apartment as a private bar, giving birth to hundreds of interactions. Kei is a skilled bartender, which should prove to be quite an asset for this night workshop.
   

  Naoko Aramaki
 
Born in Japan 6/1/1983
Now, majoring architecture at Meiji University.
I love my country and culture.
And so I'm learning Japanese tea ceremony.
I want to talk and know about many other different minds and thought from this workshop.

I was born in Nagoya in 1982.

Born in 25/1/1985 from Takayuki & Machiko. Moved in Tokyo from Aichi in 2003. And enter Meiji Univ. Long for the sea so begin surfing. Spend all time sutudying architecture so University becomes my home in 2005. Enter Urban and Architectual Design Lab. and learn architecture/ urbanism in 2006.
From nom on as Lab. work; March /2006 engaged myself in design MIZONOKUCHI restaurant. May Join in art event in TAMAKAN. Now continue various works and join join in Urban Typoon .

  Shunichi Ishizaki (JAMUO)
 
Coming from the country side, Ibaraki prefecture, to Tokyo, Shunichi was fascinated by Shimokitazawa, and decided to live in there.
He is a member of the grasroots movement "Save the Shimokitazawa" because he thinks that the government plan will destroy the bottom up type "Culture of Shimokitazawa". He organizes many cultural events aiming at sending "Shimokitazawa Magic" to the scene.
He crossed the Australian continent by bicycle in 2006, and plans on going around the world by bicycle.
He wants to bring the culture of the world to Japan, and Japanese magic to the world through the movie and music. Now, he is preparing for the journey.
Currently he is a student at the University of Senshu majoring in design. He graduated from Digital Hollywood college department of VFX .
   

  Hiroshi Yamamoto
